Ambrose Tibbitts, male wed Mary Craig 1842 #4528 Church Of England St James, Melbourne

From on Sunday, 21 August, 2011
Thank you so much Elizabeth. You have done so much work here. I can’t believe you can make any sense out of the old papers and lists-they are so hard to read.
So just so I have this right-
In her will and on her marriage license 29 MAR 1842, St James, Melbourne, Mary Craig has signed with an ‘X’ so I presume she could not read and write. Yet on the list it says ‘both’. Do you think she did this to be more appealing?
Would she have been in steering accommodation being a bounty immigrant?
Also, anyway of knowing where she would have gone when she first got off the ship?
I know about Ambrose Tibbitts, one of 190 convicts transported on the Layton, 17 June 1829 to Sydney 8th Nov 1829, Master Jn W Hurst. Sentence details: Convicted at Stafford Assizes for a term of life for Housebreaking, aged 16.
Mary was in the group of 52 unmarried females. All 277 Bounty Immigrants were housed in the Steerage part of the barque, with free passage in return for obeying the rules of the Surgeon-Superintendent in charge, and then on arrival were willing to accpt the job each was offered.
The Sydney based Immigration authorities responsible for checking the arrivals in the Bounty list show only one Unmarried Male and 4 Unmarried Females could only read, the other 48 men and 50 girls could both read and write.
The Melbourne people responsible after they arrived, were unable to record the Disposal of the crowd of new arrivals - in 8 days 5 vessels with Bounty immigrants arrived - Middlesex [Sep 30, 12 unknown, 224 named], Thomas Arbuthnot [Oct 2, 277 named], Agricola [Oct 3, 252 named], Enmore [Oct 4, 107 named], Intrinsic [Oct 7, 266 named], a total of 1136 souls - 610 expecting a job, with 190 wives and 336 children
