From Genforum by Sandra Shaw 2 Mar 2001 -
James McLeish was my 3x's great grandfather. He married Ann Bartlett about 1828. Although the first of their children namely, James Pritchard McLeish born Perthshire 1829; & also possibly Eliza McLeish born abt. 1832 were born in the UK, most were born in Tasmania, Australia. My 2x's great grandfather, Robert McLeish was born in Victoria, Australia in 1846. James was a Baker, which is stated on several of their children's birth certificates. Other childrens names were; Emily, John Franklin, Alexander & Isabella.
From Genforum by Carol Kittson in 2009
re Jas. McLeish and Ann Barlett. My husband is also a desc. We now believe that Jas died in 1847 in Melbourne although McLeish is spelt slightly different. This person is buried in the old Melb. cemetery underneath the Vic. Market carpark. Headstones were removed a long time ago, to where ??. re Ann Bartlett his 1st wife, she married a Geo. Davis Burgess in Launceston on 21 Sept.1857 and died in Laun. 14 Nov.1867. She was originally buried at the Cypress St. Cemetery but the headstones were removed in 1945 to ??. Ann had married the father-in-law of her daughter Emily (Geo. David Burgess - note father's middle name was Davis, not David) although I can't trace when she died and where) They were married in Melbourne on 2 Sep. 1852 at St. James Church of England. Believe Ann Bartlett's parents were Peter and Ann (Hart) and that they were md. in St. Bride Street London 3 Dec.1801. She also had a brother named Chas. William Barlett born 1 September 1805. Both were christ. at St. Andrews Church Holborn London If anyone can go back further than that we would love to hear from you. Also Jas. McLeish's birth details in Perthshire Scotland, and his parents names are still a mystery, however the fact that they called their 1st son Janes Pritchard seems to throw some light on the fact that perhaps his father was James and his mother's maiden name could have been Pritchard (even Harriet Pritchard), or even the Pritchard could have come down Ann Bartlett's side.
