From on 29 Aug 2014
Elizabeth, My great great grandparents, Thomas Kelly and Nabby Coglan were married around 1839, probably in Galway, Ireland. Thomas is listed as a labourer and Nabby as a milkmaid in the China’s passenger list, neither could read or write. They probably disembarked the China in Sydney.
From 1842 to 1857 they had seven children, John, Winifred, Margaret, Thomas (my gr grandfather), James William and Henry. They were all shown as living at the time of Nabby’s death in 1883.
Nabby Kelly died 7 May 1883, aged 68, at Bathurst, after 43 years in Australia. On the death cert for her son Thomas, she is called Abby Coglan, wife of Thomas Kelly, Gentleman.
My gr grandfather was born in Sydney in 1847 and the youngest child, Henry was born in Tambaroora (a gold rush town near Hill End) in 1857. Thomas junior married Sarah Palmer who was the daughter of a well-known publican in Tambaroora (Catherine Palmer), so it’s probable the family lived there for a considerable period of time.
Nabby was probably known as “Abbey” because this is the name on her grave/memorial at Bathurst. Her name is shown as “Abby” in Thomas junior’s death certificate.
Best Regards, Mike Kelly.
