Eleanor Holmes died aged 28 and was buried by St Francis Roman Catholic church of Melbourne. Reported Tuesday 25 August 1840 - A Melancholy Accident. On Saturday night a poor woman, wife of a carpenter named Holmes, residing at the rear of Mr Will's house, was nearly consumed by fire ... when her clothes caught fire. Her husband who was in bed at the time, was awakened by her screams and ... threw a blanket over her, which checked the fury of the fire. ... On Monday she was prematurely delivered, and now lies dangerously ill, her body being dreadfully scorched.
