Hello Elizabeth ,
Thank you for your great website which I have just been introduced to.
I am connected to several couples who came on the Bounty ship ‘John Bull’ arriving in Melbourne in January 1840.
One couple is listed on your site – George and Eliza (nee Maidment) Roberts, numbers 68 and 69 on the shipping record.
The other couple is not on your site -- George and Thirza (nee Maidment) Haskell, numbers 72 and 73 on the shipping record.
However, George and Thirza Haskell are both listed in the 1847 Directory. My GGGrandmother was Jane Bishop (nee Maidment) who came in 1851.
Another sister, Maria, came with her husband, Thomas Leach, in 1853. The four sisters were from Donhead St Mary in Wiltshire. Would it be possible for the Haskells to be put on the list of ‘John Bull’ immigrants please?
My cousin and I have done a lot of research on the Maidments and if anyone else out there is interested in them I am happy to have my details passed on to them,
Regards, Irene Robinson.

From on Monday, 4 October, 2010

We don't have John Hatcher's full death certificate, but do have year he died 1879 at 62 years of age in Urana NSW. There is no info in the parents field on his record. That would make his date of birth on or before about 1817. Dad said he was married in Melbourne in 1840, I have seen the church record dated 13/10/1840 We wonder - was he a convict? There were two, John Hatcher and Joseph Hatcher, both sent to Tasmania.

Answer
Tasmanian records of their convicts can be assessed at this web site. By their records, it is unlikely either convict was free to marry in Melbourne in 1840.
