Jacob Julian Grigg at age of 21, left his home in Roche, England and departed England (Port Plymouth, Devonshire) on 17 May 1837 in a sailing ship called "City of Edinburgh". Jacob Grigg arrived in Sydney on 31 Aug 1837 with his brother (John Julian Grigg), his sister-in-law (Mary Ann Grigg) and his niece (Elizabeth Grigg). Jacob continued to Victoria, arrived 10 Dec 1840, thus he became one of the Port Phillip Pioneers.

On 19 Oct 1843, they had their first child, thus starting the Jacob Julian Grigg family.
John Grigg came via Sydney with brother Jacob, wife Mary and daughter Elizabeth. Mary died in 1839 and John wed Elizabeth Ricketts on 21 March 1840 at the settlement (colony) of Port Phillip (now called Melbourne) at Church Of England St James, Melbourne. They moved to Tasmania.
