Hello Elizabeth
I wanted to both thank you and ask you a question. Firstly Thank you your site has provided me with some clues and information about the Malachi Conallin family. Ive not been able to find any information about the family arrival other than a daughter born in Liverpool England in 1841 and a son born in 1845 in Melbourne. There are several references to Malachi Conallin and Sally Ward in our Came to Port Phillip by 1849 pages.
Not only are there several references to Malachi Conallin, Malety Connanlin and Michael Conallin (his son) there is also reference to Malachy Connallin Conlan and Sally Ward baptising Michael in 1847 but also reference to a William Conley Conlan and Sally Ward baptised William died 1846, Matilda 1846, Michael 1847. I had no information at all on William and Matilda. Very exciting.
I have long suspected that Conallin may not be the original spelling so Conlan is a clue to be explored. Malachi setting in Cobram and died I n the 1890s but I can find no reference to Sally Ward.
I am wondering if you could tell me, if you have time, where you found this information so I could try to follow it up further. Ive found some references through Trove but nothing as good as this information on your pages.
Many, many thanks for all the work you have done on these pages. It is a wonderful resource.
Kindest regards, Ann
Thankyou Ann. I had not noticed that the entries you mention, belonged together.
Looks like the Presbyterian cleric was doing a safari - Albury is a long way from the Western District and Portland

Henry Condell was born in Funchal, on the Island of Madeira on the 9 September 1797, and he was the sixth of 8 children, all of whom survived. His father Joseph Alexander Condell was born in Musselburgh, Scotland in 1749, fourth son of James Condell a brewer of Leith and his wife Agnes Waugh. James, his sons and grandsons were all in the Leith brewing trade and several were wine and spirits merchants. Henry's parents Joseph Alexander Condell and Martha (nee French) Condell married in a Roman Catholic ceremony in Lincoln's Inn, London in 1783 before traveling to Madeira (Martha's birthplace), where they had a wine and spirits business.
Henry wed Marion Vallange on 28 May 1822 in Edinburgh, and left Leith for VDL on 24 June 1822 on board the "Skelton" and arrived at Hobart Town on the 24 December 1822. Marion traveled to Hobart 3 years later, leaving her first child Jane behind to be looked after by grandparents in Edinburgh. A son, William Vallange Condell, was born in VDL in 1827 at Hobart Town. His mother on her death, left him enough money to start a Hobart brewery in 1830. He moved to Port Phillip in 1839 and set up his successful brewery in Little Collins Street. Jane joined her parents in 1840, and later settled in Tasmania to raise her family.
