Carol Carroll, female wed Daniel Colnane 1842 #4645 Church Of England St James, Melbourne

From on Sunday, 14 October 2012
Hi Elizabeth, I stubbled across your web site that lists two people of interest to me, Caroline Carroll and Daniel Colnane who wed in Melbourne on 1842. These people are my GGGF and M.
I am trying to understand the context they are listed in your website. Are they ex convicts? My research suggests Daniel was but not sure about Caroline.
Regards, Jon Herbert
Daniel may be Daniel Cullenane aged 14 came to Sydney on Norfolk (3) [1832] left 831 from Cork sentenced to 7 years, born 1818 in Cork accused of Stealing cloak he was Single employed as a Carpenters boy - source Irish convicts Caroline Carroll's name appears in early church records, first for her marriage, and now I have found 3 children, thanks to your letter.

6. Charles Culnaine registered 1868 #25291, son of Cath Carrol and Daniel Culnaine at Moyston

Added by Jon on Tuesday, 16 October 2012
Daniel and Catherine had variations to their surname spelling Colnane, Colneen, Cullinane and finally Coleman. On their wedding certificate in 1842 they both put a mark because neither could write. They appear to have lived in Melbourne, Geelong, Moyston and Hamilton.
Daniel and Catherine had 11 children, John 1843, Mary 1845, Rosina 1846, Ann 1848, Charles 1848, Catherine 1851, Daniel 1853, James 1855, Margaret 1859, Jane 1861 and John Charles 1868.
Daniel died in 1875 aged 57 and was buried in an unmarked grave in the Hamilton Cemetery. After Daniels death it appears Catherine moved to a property in the Wagga Wagga area where it appears she remarried to James Bolton. She died in 1902 and is buried at Wagga Wagga. I am convinced Daniel and Catherine were both Irish convicts transported to Australia for minor offences. Daniel appears to have been 14 when he arrived in Australia from Cork.

From on Sunday, 23 January, 2011

From what we have discovered, Margaret Carroll married Patrick Murphy who was also on the Royal Saxon, don’t know whether they knew each other in Ireland. They married at St Francis Church, Melbourne, in 1842.
Patrick Murphy dies then Margaret Carroll marries great-great grandfather John Purcell in 1854. Margaret has about 4 children from her marriage to Patrick Murphy.
See the entry for John Purcell, her future husband.

Thank you so much for your reply to my email. I wasn’t too sure about the explanation of “Bounty Immigrants” but you have covered that for me in your email.
The certificate that I have for John Purcell is just a death certificate not his Immigration Certificate but if I do come across it I will forward to you. I have also found John Purcell’s future wife Margaret Carroll on the same ship as him.
Will keep you informed if I find any more about the immigration. Thanks again, Suzanne Hayes
