Others, who paid own fare

'Perilous Voyages to the New Land' by Michael Cannon, page 80 reports that 4 women and 1 man were still ill with typhoid fever when the vessel arrived, so it had to anchor some distance off shore. This gave some passengers time to complain of sailors 'mixing with female immigrants'.

James Hemphill aged 19, Andrew McKinlay, William Spur all gave reports. John McCrae had permission to visit his 2 unmarried sisters, reported that the sailors gave the girls extra food. Matters were dismissed, full bounty paid for 230 immigrants arrived.

Marquis of Bute, barque Lamont master, cleared out 11 Jan 1842 from Melbourne for Batavia

Found in the The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Wellington Provincial District], on the web page for Captain James Campbell, he was born in Argyleshire, Scotland, in 1826, and had a wide and varied experience. He went to sea in 1840 as an apprentice, and served four years on the ship “Marquis of Bute,” visiting Melbourne on that ship in 1841. He was afterwards employed as able seaman in various ships sailing to different parts of the world. During the great gold rush at Bendigo, Victoria, he again came out to Australia, and for two years tried his luck on the fields.

Marquis of Bute with Captain Lewis Wilson, came London to Melbourne, arrived 15th December 1853, with 10 passengers, Mr Barclay aged 23, Mr Benjamin aged 26 with Mrs aged 24 and boy (Phillip) aged 3 and girl 1 (Elizabeth Harris and Isaiah registered Isabella 1855 #3388 born at Melbourne), Miss Cope 28, Mr Fosket 38, Miss Harris 22, Mr Ruddock 40,

Marquis of Bute also appears in a report on the life of Rev Edward Cridge - the newly appointed Hudson’s Bay Company chaplain and minister for the district of Victoria, Western Canada. He and his wife, Mary, ten years his junior, arrived at Fort Victoria, on a rainy Sunday April 1, 1855. The Reverend Cridge and his new wife Mary sailed from Gravesend, England, September 20, 1854, on the Marquis of Bute, a 469 ton barque, chartered by the Hudson’s Bay Company. Along with their twenty-one fellow passengers they watched as the lights of their native land disappeared in the distance at the beginning of this six-month voyage. They suffered the lack of fresh fruits and water, battled heavy seas and pelting rain, safely rounded the ghostly but dangerous coastline of Cape Horn enduring freezing cold and then hot sun. All the passengers would suffer some type of sickness. Their journey followed the usual route of the day from England across the Atlantic sometimes carried by favourable winds, down the east coast of South America and around Cape Horn, and putting into the Sandwich Islands for several weeks. Refreshed and well rested, the voyage continued north to the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
