Use Tasmania's Arrivals and Departures indexs with ship's name and year to get passengers recorded. Few records have survived for arrivals of ports outside Hobart. Records of people departing were not routinely or comprehensively kept at Tasmanian ports.
Reported 4 Sept 1840, Mr Wright, the Chief Constable, arrived overland from Sydney yesterday, after a journey of 18 days. He passed on the road, bound for Melbourne, Messrs Carrington, McFarlane, P Snodgrass and Dr OHara
Comments - Postage Melbourne to Sydney (overland rate?) is fifteen pence for a single letter.
The Overland Mail to Port Phillip leaves Sydney on the afternoon of Saturday, reaches Campbelltown the same night, and Yass on the Tuesday following, at 4PM. The postman starts from Yass on the Tuesday at 5PM and reaches Melbourne on the afternoon of Thursday, so 12 days are thus consumed while the mail is in transit. The return mail leaves Melbourne on the morning of Monday, reaches Yass on the Tuesday week at 5PM, and Sydney on the morning of Saturday. The distance is calculated at 650 miles, and the road is 'none of the most difficult'.
My question - how many horses, and stopping places are provided, or does the Postman cart his own tent and provisions for self and horses?
